Third grade programming:

During the winter months, staff from the Center for Archaeology visit several dozen county schools to conduct interactive programs that supplement the 3rd grade archaeology curriculum lessons. These programs have three components - a vocabulary review, a tool sharing presentation, and a hands-on artifact identification activity. Using a work sheet and an artifact from Oregon Town, students use archaeology skills (measuring, describing, and weighing) to identify an object and hypothesize about its use in the past. A follow up assignment formatted like the state-wide MSPAP ‘standards’ exam is provided to the  classroom teacher. The 3rd grade archaeology curriculum is supported by an instructional program televised district-wide on the BCP's Cable station.

An excavation experience on a simulated site is offered annually to ten 3rd grade classes not otherwise serviced by a school visitation program. The 20'x20' manufactured site, located at Oregon Ridge Park, has historic and prehistoric components with modern artifacts replicating architectural features and food related activities.
